The European Mile

The European Athletics Championships Berlin 2018 are breaking new and innovative ground by building a bridge from the Olympic Stadium to the city centre of Berlin with the European Mile.

The 50-metre-high bell tower in the colours of the European Athletics Championships, a blue track around the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, a central stage and several 10.000 visitors daily – these are just some of the ingredients for the so-called European Mile in the heart of Berlin. From 6 to 12 August 2018, athletics will be brought to the people. Athletes and their fans will throw a big party in Berlin’s city centre.

The emotional highlight here will be the 38 medal ceremonies, which will be brought from the stadium into the vibrant heart of Europe’s metropolis. Athletes and fans from all over Europe can look forward to great emotions when the medals in gold, silver and bronze are awarded like never before in athletics. Framed by special performances and very close to the thousands of fans in the GENERALI ARENA at the Breitscheidplatz.

GENERALI ARENA can hold 3,000 spectators and will be the highlight in Berlin’s City West. In addition, all athletes, officials and media representatives are accommodated in hotels around the Breitscheidplatz where the magic is going to happen.

The men’s shot put qualification on early Monday evening, the marathon and race walking competitions on Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday also take place at and around the Breitscheidplatz.

In Berlin’s city centre, the focus is on the combination of sports and entertainment. The opening ceremony with live performances by well-known artists will be the prelude to Germany’s biggest sports event this year. The sporting competitions will be embedded in a show program, through which a well-known presenter will lead daily.

Furthermore, the competitions from the Olympic Stadium will be broadcasted on giant screens. The best thing about it: The European Mile is free of charge for all visitors and for every event.
